Ten of Batons

We begin by placing this image in the context of the entirety of the Suit of Batons, focusing the mantra HE WILLS on the region of the solar plexus. The reader is then encouraged to move the first part of the Inner Radiance Sequence, beginning with the mantra “In purest outpoured light radiates the Godhead of the world”, and then working through the chakras from root to crown in relation to the seven Healing Miracles and the seven I AM statements.

We then bring the Ten of Batons into relation with the 5th Letter of the Divine Alphabet: He; the Fifth Arcanum: The Pope; and the quality of “Love of God.” This finds its radiation in the Tree of Life between the sephira of the heart (Glory) and the sephira of the right side of the head (Light). Those who know the Grail Knight’s Practice can then perform the 5th part: The Healing of the Breath in the Full Circle; “Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread.”

(This is the same whether we use the Five of Batons as the pivot point or the Six of Batons).

The Apocalypse readings for the Ten of Batons come from Chapter 21:14-18:

…And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the twelve names of the twelve Apostles of the suckling lamb. And the one who was speaking with me had a gold measuring reed, so that he could measure the city and its gates and her wall. And the city lies foursquare, and her length as great as her breadth. And with the reed he measured the city as twelve hundred stadia; its length and breadth and height are equal. And he measured its wall as a hundred and forty-four cubits, accord to the measure of a human being, which was the angel’s measure. And her wall’s enclosure was jasper, and the city pure gold like pure glass…

after studying Robert Powell’s ideas astrosophical for decades at this point, i have found that working “sidereally” is basically the best practice that will always offer reasonable, practical, obvious, sincere, supportive, and even protective results.
having said that, i feel that, all due respect to the Grail Knight practices, we can possibly also look at each card of the minor arcana in terms of number resonance with each unit number with each card, so the first card with number one, the magician, and number eleven, and number twenty-one and so on. extrapolating to the ten of batons, might this resonate most strongly with card ten, the wheel of fortune (which is possibly the intensely hidden or “occulted” Prophetess, as indicated obliquely in Meditations on the Tarot’s chapter X in describing the Wheel of Fortune card as being less evolved). (by the way, as Jesus calls John the Baptist “more than a prophet”, could this mean the card XXI, the Fool? you may know there are cultures that historically Revere the Fool as sacred or holy, as being those who are unafraid to lampoon the serious problems of the day in public to thereby stimulate people to reflect, have certain feelings, and impulses to action!).
another idea is that the ten of batons must surely be relating to the ten commandments, which are lovingly outlined in MOTT at the end of Letter-Meditation XI. the number ten features prominently in the brief classic work, the Sefer Yetzirah or Book of Formation, which Valentin Tomberg believed was authored by the patriarch Abraham! this latter work seems to be the document referred to indirectly as the centerpiece of wisdom in the Hebrew classic, the Zohar, or Book of Splendor.
also, the “purest outpoured light radiates the Godhead of the world” may connect with Dr. Rudolf Joseph Lawrence Steiner’s (his full name) comment in ‘An Outline of Occult Science’ from chapter 4, ‘the evolution of the cosmos and man’ about four sections in (depending on your translation), “the manifestations which preceded the heat on old Saturn can be present only for him who possesses supersensible perception. three such states may be mentioned: pure soul heat, which is outwardly imperceptible; pure spiritual light, which is external darkness; finally, a spiritual state of being that is complete within itself and needs no external being in order to become conscious of itself. pure inner heat accompanies the Spirits of Motion (Dynamis); pure spiritual light, that of the Spirits of Wisdom (Kyriotetes); pure inner being is bound up with the first emanation of the Spirits of Will (Thrones).” if you remember, that doesn’t even reference the Cherubim, the Serpahim, or the members of the Holy Trinity, which implies further dimensions of knowledge to be apprehended.
i just looked up ‘transparent gold’ and found that theoretically if it’s very, very pure it could be transparent and i previously understood it can be transparent when very thin (like gold leaf) which can have a greenish or bluish color. ordinarily, gold, even when produced through electrolytical methods, is not 100% pure, but rather 99.999% pure and the impurities could be the actual coloring agent (like in most diamonds, where the just the impurities present in the stone often dictate the final color of the gemstone), the impurities in very purified gold 99.995% are numerous. gold in an acid form can be transparent and a beautiful deep reddish or purple color as in the ‘royal purple’ of the robe of the Caesars. i just now learned that gold can be in crystal form like cube, octahedron, dodecahedron(!) but with round not sharp edges somewhat like some rare diamonds, and others like trapezohedral.
i just also looked up jasper and was amazed and astonished by the incredible variation of color it can have, similar in that regard to the varieties of tourmalines, which Steiner said represented Christ in the mineral kingdom. it can be dark red, bright yellow, orange, light blue, sapphire blue, white, grey, charcoal, dalmatian, and, i’m sure, more.
also, don’t forget the chakras as mentioned in MOTT in chapter XII, The Hanged Man, where the lower chakras (probably including here the rarely mentioned lower eight-petalled chakra, it’s mentioned for example, in “Kundalini Yoga and the West”, as the ananda-kanda (‘root of bliss’) or wish-fulfilling tree, worth googling) are referencing the ‘perceptible light’, and the higher chakras see the ‘imperceptible light’, whereas the middle chakra sees its synthesis in the ‘fire of Emmaus’. as Steiner’s exercise doesn’t mention specifically the ‘imperceptible light’, it seems to me my previous observation about there being a possible connection to Steiner’s so-called ‘main exercise’ is unlikely. while writing this however, i am reminded of the idea that you can meditate-pray, ‘ou, si vous preferez’, pray-meditate (see MOTT’s chapter XXI for more on these practices) for new ideas, feelings and impulses, hopes, dreams, and so on, it’s a practice i do recommend. (Edgar Cayce said, ‘prayer is talking to God, meditation is listening to God.’ i feel it can be restated as, ‘praying is asking God (or Goddess or saint or more than a single individual), meditation is hearing the answer’. in other words, you can pray for knowledge or something else and (at least sometimes) receive it! whether people understand fully this reality or not, it does seem to be the principle of the process of progress, with all its happinesses and heartaches. for, it must be said, all true knowledge received is a grace! when the rabbis of old received a new revelation it was always accompanied with weeping and sometimes embracing. Padre Pio had several noteworthy prayers (link here https://padrepiodevotions.org/prayers-of-padre-pio/, one of which was,
“Efficacious Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
This novena prayer was recited every day by Padre Pio for all those who asked for prayers.
The faithful are invited to recite it daily, so as to be spiritually united with the prayer of Padre Pio.
    I. O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, ask and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.” Behold I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of [insert your intention.]
Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory be to the Father…Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.
II. O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, if you ask any thing of the Father in my name, He will give it to you.” Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of [insert your intention.]
Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory be to the Father…Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.
III. O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away.” Encouraged by your infallible words I now ask for the grace of [insert your intention.]
Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory be to the Father…Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.
O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of you, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your tender mother and ours.
Say the Hail, Holy Queen and add: St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.”
…truly a wonderful prayer sequence. my guess is that the Grail Knight training also suggests three additional petition-like verses after the asking , the seeking, and the knocking, but that there could easily be more, three more petitions above that or even more beyond those nine! it wouldn’t surprise so much as be welcome; in fact, it would be more of a surprise if they weren’t waiting for the most awake and active souls.
lastly, i hope to share with the readers here, a reminder of a comment of Dr. Steiner regarding the renewal of the breath: he believed in a new manner of Rosicrucian breathing that far from taking oxygen from our surroundings and exhaling carbon dioxide, we would rather exhale oxygen like the plants do during photosynthesis! i must also apologize for great length of this comment, i hadn’t really intended to do so but i felt like i could continue at some length without fear of either overtiring or otherwise repelling potential readers. i am also still feeling my way about this forum. thank you for reading!

i forgot to mention another symbol the staff or wand or even club features in is the staff of Moses which he used to strike a rock to call forth a stream of drinkable water at a second time and place, instead of calling the water forth verbally as he was instructed to ‘in front of the people’, it was apparently considered a serious sin in the eyes of YHVH, and enough to justify divine punishment. so another symbol of power.
